Panoramic Sunset, Starry Night and An Owl

August 6th - Dave and I sat out on the deck, and watched as the deep oranges of the hot summer night settled along the horizon, just after sunset. It has been awhile since we have had this clear a panoramic view, which included the hills near Dana Point, the top of Catalina Island, the oil rigs offshore in the Pacific Ocean near Huntington Beach, the harbor at Long Beach and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. As we watched the deep orange half moon set over the horizon behind Newport Coast, we caught site of a huge owl swooping down along the hillside behind our house - hunting. The wing span on the owl had to be a good 5+ feet - obviously, the hunting is good around here. We did a little star gazing, finding the Big Dipper, to the north and following where it points to find the North Star. We watched the spectacular fireworks show at Disneyland, which we could see quite clearly tonight from the back deck. (Disneyland is about 25 miles away from our house.) It was still a balmy 72 degrees at 9:45 pm, when we came in the house.
